Ealing Wildlife Group Photography Exhibition

‘The aim of our annual wildlife photography competition is to showcase our natural, wild spaces, celebrating the important relationships between people and local wildlife in the Borough of Ealing through an outdoor exhibition of photography.

We want to explore what nature and wildlife means to you. Everyone sees their surroundings through a different lens, so we wish to celebrate individual relationships with nature. This is not purely a technical photography exhibition. Equally, if not more important is the portrayal of images that will engage the public with the natural world at a local level in Ealing.

Winning entries will be displayed in a public exhibition in Walpole Park in October and November 2018, and images may be used by Ealing Wildlife Group to promote local biodiversity and wildlife conservation.’

Ealing Wildlife Group is a community of wildlife enthusiasts dedicated to protecting, encouraging & celebrating local biodiversity in Ealing.

Louise Davies, 'The Elements In Colour'

Glorious colour-soaked landscapes take centre stage in this winter exhibition of oil paintings and prints from contemporary British artist Louise Davies.

From windswept Yorkshire moorlands to autumnal London river scenes and sun-drenched Spanish almond groves, Louise’s fluid lines, shifting shapes and sumptuous palette conjure a vivid sense of emotion and memory around time and place.

Says Louise: “I think memory is important in my work. Perhaps it stems from a childhood in the West Country, playing and walking in the landscape, feeling that closeness to nature.

“I get a very strong response when I see a landscape of beauty; even if suddenly the weather changes and rain is coming in – it’s that still beautiful moment with the light, feel and drama of the rain or a storm.”

For the first time, ‘The Elements In Colour’ brings together in one large-scale show Louise’s new oil on canvas works alongside her etchings and monoprints.

In all, Louise’s painterly approach sings through, pulling together intense layers of colour and overlapping, abstract forms with sweeping lineation.

A Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Louise spent her childhood in Bath and its surrounding villages and now lives and works in south east London. She has a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins and an MA in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art. Her work is held in many public and private collections, including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

Martin Langford, 'This Is Us'

Martin Langford, 'This Is Us'

From comic strip-style skits on the drudgery of daily life to dark labyrinthine worlds exposing humanity’s foibles, printmaker Martin Langford’s works mix sardonic cartoonishness with powerful social commentary.

In this major new solo show at For Arts Sake, he takes a blackly humorous look at the way we, collectively as a society, are architects of our own existential crises.

Intricate etchings feature monolithic, looming creatures forged from heavy industry, hard architecture and accumulated junk. Inspired by disaster movies of old – Godzilla, King Kong – they satirise our obsessions with consumption, consumerism and cash-fuelled Big City expansion.

Persistence.jpg
Ghost.jpg

In other works, our work and domestic lives are rendered bleak cartoons of victimhood, while, elsewhere, quietly blistering pieces interrogate the relentless decimation of our natural environment. There is hope, too, though – the flourishing of green shoots amidst, and in spite of, the desolation.

Says Martin: “My work is about the environment, about pollution, the way we live and about man’s collective greed. I think people are tired of being lectured to about ‘green’ issues but they do still care – with a bit of humour, I believe you can relay a message simply and effectively.”

He adds: “‘This Is Us’ is about how we have collectively as a society ‘created’ what we have now. The large creatures I draw – whether they are made from buildings, industry, cities or the junk we throw out – these represent ‘us’; a manifestation of our actions.”

London.jpg
Industree.jpg

A member of the prestigious Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Martin studied under the renowned David Glück on the Advanced Printmaking MA at Central St Martin’s. He was drawn early on to the graphic black and white quality of etching, and cites among his inspirations the late comic book author Harvey Pekar, Robert Crumb, Georges Seurat and M.C. Escher.

RE Printmakers at For Arts Sake Summer Show

A thrilling large-scale exhibition showcasing the cream of contemporary British printmaking opens at For Arts Sake this summer.

More than 80 pieces feature in this wide-ranging group show by members of the prestigious Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

Summer Moon - Anita Klein.jpg

One of the world’s premier arts organisations, the ‘RE’ (originally the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers) was founded by Sir Francis Seymour Haden in 1880, in reaction to the Royal Academy’s reluctance to exhibit etchings and engravings. The name changed in 1991 to embrace the full breadth and scope of contemporary printmaking practices, but members of the historic institution retain the letters ‘RE’ after their name.

Its artists number the very best working in print today, from renowned printmakers Anita Klein, Mychael Barratt, Gail Brodholt, Paul Catherall, Trevor Price, Gerry Baptist and Veta Gorner to a wealth of exciting new talent.

This exhibition spans the full range of printmaking techniques, including etching, linocut, wood engraving, screenprint and more. It’s simply a must for fans and collectors of the art form everywhere.

Joe Webb, 'Lost & Found - a Retrospective'

An exciting retrospective of superstar British artist Joe Webb’s silkscreens and collages. Tracking back to the beginning of his printmaking career in 2012, when he burst on to the art scene winning a Saatchi Gallery competition, this show includes some of his earliest works as well as new limited edition pieces for sale.

Joe, who was named one of the Evening Standard’s ‘Exciting Young British Artists to Look Out For’ in 2017, has won an army of high profile fans including Coldplay, who cited his work as inspiration for their ‘Up and Up’ video. His work has also graced album covers by Janelle Monae and Tears For Fears and is much sought-after by private collectors.

Embrace-small-red.jpg

‘Lost & Found’ refers not only to Joe’s creative process – finding long-lost images and magazines and reinventing them as artworks, which are often biting satires on contemporary politics and society – but also Joe’s own reinvention from the commercial world of work to finding his way as a working artist.

'Meet the Artist' - Natasha Kumar

British-Indian printmaker Natasha Kumar will be in the gallery to answer questions and talk through the vibrant works on display in her new exhibition of screenprints and etchings, 'India - People and Place'.

Natasha's vivid, colourful artworks capture a deep sense of love for her paternal homeland and for a 21st century India that is at once contemporary and timeless. We see the country through glorious, boldly coloured snapshots: the sunlight through a diaphanous sari or the steady homeward journey of a woman and her cow.

She first made her name as an artist at the age of 17, earning a place at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition before studying printmaking at the Venice Academia di Belle Arti and completing an MA in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art.

Her works will be on show in our Upper Gallery until April 8.

Natasha Kumar, 'India - People and Place'

An exhibition in our Upper Gallery of British-Indian printmaker Natasha Kumar's vivid, colourful images of contemporary India.

From village scenes to palace views, Natasha's screenprints and etchings capture the art of the everyday and a deep sense of love for her paternal homeland; we see the country through glorious, boldly coloured snapshots - the sunlight through a diaphanous sari or the steady homeward progress of a woman and her cow.

Natasha, who divides her time between London and a rural farmhouse, with regular trips back to India for inspiration, comes from a long line of established artists on her mother's English side and traces her Indian heritage back to Kashmir and Afghanistan via stories of partition and lost family gold.

She first made her name as an artist at the age of 17, earning a place at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
