Northfields Allotments Summer Open Day

Northfields Allotments Summer Open Day

London’s oldest allotment to open gates for fourth annual Summer Open Day

Plotholders at London’s oldest allotment are giving visitors the opportunity to experience the capital’s horticultural heritage this summer as Northfields Allotments opens its gates for its fourth annual summer open day.

On Sunday 1st July between 1pm and 5pm, plotholders at Northfields Allotments on Northfield Avenue, West Ealing, will invite visitors to join them for the fourth Northfields Allotments Summer Open Day.

Northfields Allotments Summer Open Day 2017_Wildlife-friendly Shed.jpg

Visitors will be able to peruse the wide variety of plots on the site and see what is growing, as well as joining a guided tour to discover more about the site’s wildlife and history.

Other attractions will include the onsite apiary where the bees produce Northfields Allotments honey; a heritage plot with a World War II Anderson shelter; a wildlife-friendly shed made from recycled materials; and a traditional potager plot.

In addition, there will be a refreshment stall selling tea, coffee and cakes; plant and produce stalls; kids activities; planting demos; and the Damson Tree Bar where visitors can enjoy a drink in the orchard.

Entry is FREE, although donations will be welcome.

Visitors should come to the main allotment gates at the north end of Northfield Avenue in West Ealing (opposite Dean Court). Dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.

For anyone with an interest in gardening, London’s history or simply curious about what takes places on a modern urban allotment, this will be an unmissable event.

Christina Fox, chairman of the Ealing Dean Allotment Society, said: “Our fourth Summer Open Day comes at an important point in the history of Northfield Allotments. Our plotholders spent last year worrying that part of the site would be built on, however these development plans seem to have been put on hold for the time being. That said, the threat hasn’t gone away so we intend to make the most of this opportunity to celebrate our wonderful green space.

“Our open days have always been really well supported by the local community. Last summer, over 700 guests came to our historic site and I know I speak for all of our plotholders when I say that we are really excited to be inviting visitors back through the gates again this year.”

A petition opposing the development has been set up and can be accessed here:

This Easter we welcome local families to join Nature Links for some outdoor family fun and learning at Boston Manor Park.

Our award winning play sessions are based on the Forest School approach to learning for children under ten and their grown ups. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for families to be active outside, make new friends and enjoy new experiences together in their local area.

At each session our Leaders bring along some of our favourite kits and prepare outdoor play activities for you and your child to enjoy at our specially selected site. Sessions are designed to be child led so although we provide some inspiration our supportive team always encourage children to follow their own ideas and interests. You can expect: den building, nature crafts, bubbles, bug hunting and bird watching.

Sessions are run by the Nature Links team, headed by Heidi who is: a qualified teacher, Forest School Leader, 1st aider and DBS checked. She will be assisted by the team who include: teachers, Forest School Leaders, Bushcraft instructors, artists, gardeners and early Years specialists. You and your children will be in expert hands for our adventure together.

Spring is a wonderful time to visit WWT London Wetland Centre as new life is bursting out all around with babies, bugs and buds in abundance. But some of our ducklings have gone missing - can you help us find them?  Bring your friends and family and follow our Easter GIANT duck trail around our nature reserve to discover where they are hiding. You’ll need all your special detective skills to track them. Look up as well as down, our ducks like to perch above you sometimes. They also love splashing around, so they won’t be far from the water. If you find them all you’ll win a prize! £1 per trail including a prize.

As well as searching for our GIANT ducks, there’s also lots of Dusty’s ducky cousins to see, plus join our team for a spot of Pond Dipping or find out how to build a nest during one of our Wild Play sessions.
